Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

Sir, if you don't believe dogs have souls, you can take your spurious theology elsewhere.
ahhhh souls! I wonder if God has a good size collection he keeps in the attic which he divies out on conception....or does he just whoosh one in as junior is on the slide out of that cosy cocoon?

It’s great that you posted the Strong’s Lexicon, it’s very informative!

Did you notice any of those verses, where it says the soul was dead?

Because the Bible teaches that…

Leviticus 19:28…

Leviticus 21:1…

Leviticus 21:11…

Numbers 5:2…

Numbers 6:6…

Numbers 6:11…

Numbers 19:13…

Deuteronomy 14:1…

Ezekiel 18:4…

Ezekiel 18:20…

..and others.

The concept of the “immortal soul”, is not found in the Bible.

In fact, such a doctrine conflicts with Jesus’ future Resurrection promise (John 5:28,29; John 6:40), for if the dead are already ‘living in another realm’, as is often taught, then there’s no need to bring them back to life…..

“To resurrect is to bring back from the dead…Resurrecting always involves bringing something back to life.”

Mockery. Really?
nahhhhh, humour....which we need more of. It's risky though because the religious are offended whenever their 'castles' have a revealing spotlight on them. Take the various published caricatures of Muhamud.....the Moslems see red and guts for garters becomes an acceptable option.

Verses 19 & 20 tells us a lot, too.

Ma'am, you may not care for the way QT asked it, but the question he asks is quite profound and has obvious real-life implications. When does that mass of cells become a living נָ֫פֶש (soul)? At conception, or when it takes the first "breath of life" (Genesis 2:7)? Or some undefined time in between?

I believe they have souls and go to Heaven.
1 Corinthians 15:50
(50) Now I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood can’t inherit God’s Kingdom; neither does the perishable inherit imperishable.

In order to get into heaven we need to be changed to have a spiritual body. Only Christians are promised that. Everyone else, will be resurrected with a flesh and bones human body again, and will live on the earth. Animals will not be resurrected, because resurrection is only available to humans, descendants of Adam, as a result of the redemption price that Jesus paid. The sacrifice of a human life does not redeem animals from sin, and animals are not capable of becoming Christians! Therefore there will not be any animals in heaven.

Strictly speaking, it is not a matter of animals having souls; rather it is that animals are living souls (nephesh in Hebrew) (Gen 1:20). The difference is that God has formed the spirit in man.

Thus animals are living souls while human beings are also living souls with a spirits. Thus I am a living soul; I have a body and a spirit. It is worth noting that in both the OT and the NT when speaking of human beings, soul and spirit are often used interchangeably even though strictly speaking there is a difference between the two.

For clarification also. The word too in Greek used for "soul" in this passage is psyche, 'soul'. See the interlinear. So, this supports the understanding that everything that has life is a being, a creature with a soul. The soul is not the spirit but rather it's the thing, the creature that has life, has consciousness, the quickening of God.

Rev 16:3 KJV

3And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.

Can you show us some verses where it does that….? It’s worth a look.

Also, Spirit and soul, according to Hebrews 4:12, can be divided, so they cannot be one in the same.

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

(ASV) Gen 1:20 And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures (Heb - nephesh), and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens."

(ASV) Gen 1:21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature (Heb - nephesh) that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

(ASV) Gen 1:24 And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures (Heb - nephesh) according to their kinds--livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so.

(ASV) Gen 2:7 then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature (Heb - nephesh) .

(NASB) Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being (Heb - nephesh).

(KJV) Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Heb - nephesh).

You will find in a word search of the OT, the word "soul" is almost universally translated from the Hebrew word "nephesh". In all cases, "soul" means living being. The word "spirit" is, so far as I can find, universally from the Hebrew word "ruach". Again, so far as I can find, "ruach" is reserved for the human being, while "nephesh" is used for both animals and human beings.

Thus the human being is a living being, a living creature, a living soul, with a spirit.

There is a great deal more to be said about all of that, but perhaps that answers you basic question.

  • What is the difference between a "soul" and a "spirit"?
  • What are the properties of each?
  • Is consciousness a requirement to say a creature is a soul?
