Why did Jesus say "It is finished?"
The work that was prophesied Jesus would do was finished.

(4) Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Psalms 69:21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

John 19:23-24 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. (24) They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. In 135 CE, many of the Jewish communities were massacred and Jews were banned from living inside Jerusalem. A pagan Roman temple was set up on the former site of Herod's Temple.

With a pagan temple setup on the site of Herod's Temple, Judaism is finished. All that is left is a fantasy in peoples minds. We are in a new dispensation at which Jesus is the head, and people fight it saying horrible things about the one they will one day answer to.

The way I look at it, Christ did all the suffering he could do to cleanse us of our sin, and just before giving up the ghost said, "it is finished." Don't diminish His sacrifice by saying He said that while alive. It is He that starts covenants, and it is He that ends covenants. So it ends when He says it ends. Then the sign of Jonah began for the Jews, and the resurrection was the manifestation that God accepted His Son's sacrifice and raised Him from the dead.

The New Covenant was what He preached. To believe on Him, be righteous to the core of your thoughts Matthew 5-6, not just the surface actions, and love both God and your neighbor. His preaching was like writing a will and testament that doesn't come into affect until the writer dies. The Day of Pentecost was the "reading of the will" when it came into affect for all those who repented, accepted Him, and He gave His powerful Spirit to to keep the New Covenant.

It's a matter of semantics. You used the words "not inaccurate," I believe. Accuracy is not applicable to the number 613 (which is widely disputed) in the discussion regarding the total number of commands in the Torah or in the OT. This is a fact. I can't help that.

Because that # has come to represent that specific doctrine; and therefore if you are going to dispute that #, you need to come up with a # that can represent that doctrine in its place, lest you become guilty of making a doctrine of holy scripture unpreachable.

There are 1,050 commands in the New Testament for Christians to obey. Due to repetitions we can classify them under 69 headings. They cover every phase of man's life in his relationship to God and his fellowmen, now and hereafter. If obeyed, they will bring rich rewards here and forever; if disobeyed, they will bring condemnation and eternal punishment. Are the 69 found in the new testament figured in the 613? Must we follow those 69 commandments in order to be saved

There is ONE Command in the entire Two Testaments for all True Believers to obey. Due to the increase in sin we can't classify all the resultant Laws under any number of headings. They had to cover every phase of man's life in the history of his bedevilled relationships with God and his fellowmen, up until now. If the One Commandment (Two-In-One) be obeyed, it would bring rich rewards here and forever -- which Christ indeed did in our place on our behalf for our perfected salvation IN HIM. Is this One Law of God found in the New Testament, it figures it is found in the Old Testament AS WELL. But we disobeyed the LAW OF GOD, and brought condemnation and eternal punishment upon ourselves AS DID ISRAEL of old. And THIS ONLY LAW OF GOD is found in the TEN Commandments make no mistake! And in the Fourth Commandment par excellence! Must we follow This ONE Command / Commandment in order to be saved? IT IS WRITTEN, Yes! Say no more.

Would not His Hebrew speaking friends have called Him Yeshua though? (Joshua) I can't imagine them calling Him a Greek transliteration. I would also suggest that despite the NT bring translated into Greek at one stage and being handed down to us on that form, the original letter to the Hebrews would hardly be written in Greek. That makes no sense. So while I believe the original letter said Yeshua, it wasn't referring to the Hebrew soldier under Moses tutelage. After all, the Angel of the Presence who was the true leader of Israel through their journey from Egypt was the Son of God.

Do you think I would do such a thing, CL? I'm suggesting that what was finished might not be what some people think was finished. The resurrection was necessary to complete the death to sin - new life in Christ motif. So it must have been something besides general atonement that was finished whet He announced it. Even the ascension was part of the atonement ("Touch me not, for I have not yet ascended to my Father"). The Sanctuary services weren't merely a wanton bloodbath of poor, dumb animals. The plan of salvation was on display for the world to see.

The Calvary event is and always will be the centerpiece of time, space, and matter. It is the sublime expression of Godly (self-sacrificing, other-centered) love. Words can't describe the glory and beauty of it. The altar of burnt offering was at the entrance to the tent of meeting, not the ultimate destination--the Holy of Holies. But being at the entrance, it was the way for the sinner and the end. But atonement is not completed there.

What was finished (besides the first phase of redemption) was the unfallen angels' sympathy for Satan. Did you not read the chapter called "It Is Finished" in Desire Of Ages when you were an Adventist?
