Pearl, this is one of the most striking verses to the contrary. Hebrews 10:26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left

I suppose OSAS crowd want to parse "being saved" from "received knowledge of the truth." Semantic argument doesn't cover the sin that no sacrifice covers. No sacrifice covers this sin, includes the sacrifice of Christ. You don't recognize this as God's word?

You are right, the fruit of salvation is a changed life.

You seem to enjoy ranting against trying to earn our salvation, but can you quote a single post in this forum that states that we need earn our salvation?
after we received the initial grace of justification we must participate in perseverance and remain faithful to enter into eternal salvation

How do spiritually dead people choose to believe in him first?

Eph 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
Eph 2:2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
Eph 2:3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Eph 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christby grace you have been saved
Eph 2:6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Eph 2:7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Eph 2:9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Does this not show that justification is all of God? I don't see how those who are dead are able to make any decision to believe apart from a work of God on their heart first.

Does this not also show that we are justified solely on the work and merit of Christ, which is to be received by faith, refuting universalism?
justification is a free gift of God the initial grace in which we stand, and provides union with God and His communion of saints but we have grace not eternal salvation!

Matthew 12:50
Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”

Doing = Action = Work.

This is different from ‘works’ as that loaded word is used in Scripture. OSAS folks suppose you are saving yourself as a man drowning in rough seas for grabbing hold of a life preserver (faith) thrown to you by Ensign Jesus at the command of the captain of the ship, YHWH. That’s how sinful you are in laziness, in doctrinally refusing to do the work that is our burden to do.
((works definitions))

(kinds of works)

Unfruitful works:
a) works of the law

Refers to the unfruitful works of the mosaic covenant

b) works of the flesh

Listed in Gal 5:19-21 & Eph 5:3-5
these cause the loss of grace and the bar us from salvation in the kingdom of God. the unfruitful works of darkness

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. eph 5:6

c) dead or natural works

Works that are good in and of themselves but are not in union with Christ and grace and have power to accomplish perseverance unto eternal salvation!

Apart from Christ: NOTHING! Jn 15:5

Living works or deeds of rightousness!

(living works) (faith & works)

Supernatural good works (gifts of God) accomplished in union with Christ and empowered by His grace with perseverance to the end of our life unto eternal salvation!

Hello.

I believe both sides here are wrong, but both have truth in them.

Works are necessary, but they are not meritorious. Thats the solution.

So, are we commanded to do good works? Surely we are, as the Scriptures cited clearly show. According to Ephesians, we are also said to be saved unto good works.

But does that mean we are justified by these works? No, we are justified by faith alone in Christ alone. But the idea is, we are justified by faith alone, but that very faith never comes alone. A person who has true faith will also, together with that faith, have good works.

The two positions taken in this thread are these:

Faith + Works -> Justification
Faith -> Justification - Works

The first is a form of legalism, which Paul denies, since we are said to be justified apart from the works of the law.
The second is a form of antinomianism, which Paul also denies, because we can no longer live in sin since we are dead to sin.

So the solution is this:

Faith -> Justification + Works

If we have faith, we are truly justified based solely on that faith. But that justified estate of ours will also definitely produce good works, which nevertheless play no part in our justification. That is the position of the classical Protestant Reformers, set down in their creeds. I believe this beautifully brings these seemingly contradictory things (faith & works) together.

I hope that helps!
faith and works after justification are meritorious!

Cos in justification we have union with God in Christ by grace, empowered by His life, grace, merits, and Holy Spirit!

Jn 15:5

apart from Christ?

NOTHING!

phil 4:13

Union with Christ?

ALL THINGS!

Jeremiah 25:14
I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.

I believe the dividing lines is "works" is a derogatory term that people apply to earning their own salvation. This is different from the responsibility we have being saved to "work."

The question of "earning" something has been castigated to an extreme. In Proverbs 26:15
Lazy people take food in their hand but don’t even lift it to their mouth.

The lazy might complain of the work they have to do in lifting it to their mouth.
new testament as well!

rom 2:6:7

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

rev 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

rev 2:10
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

So are you saying these contradict all the other scriptures and all the warnings were just joking around.
They say if you go to scriptures with a belief you can find anything. But that is the wrong way to understand the scriptures. Let the scriptures instruct you not you the scriptures. Yeshua and Apostles warned Christians of Hell. It is a central them.
I was supporting you! thks

As I pointed out to someone else, salvation is spoken of in Scripture using three terms: justification (a one-time, past event); sanctification (both a one-time, past event and ongoing process); glorification (at death or after the final judgement). Justification leads to sanctification, which leads to glorification:

Rom 8:30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. (ESV)

Believers are already saved unto eternal salvation:

Joh 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
Joh 3:15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
Joh 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (ESV)

Joh 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. (ESV)

Joh 6:47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. (ESV)

Joh 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. (ESV)

And Paul repeatedly uses past tense for the salvation of believers:

Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— (ESV)
...
Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Rom 10:10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. (ESV)

2Ti 1:9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, (ESV)

Tit 3:5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, (ESV)

All of it--justification, sanctification, glorification--is by the grace of God.

All of it--justification, sanctification, glorification--is by the grace of God.
eternal life is not eternal salvation

eternal life is the life of God, Christ shares His life with us by grace. Jn 10:10

some of scripture excludes works

some scripture includes works

contradiction? no!

implies that salvation is a multiple part process, some parts we have no participation, some we must participate!

The initial grace of justification:

Justification is a gratuitous gift of God!

No man can merit, or earn grace either by works or by faith

Initial grace by works? no!
by faith? no!
faith alone? no!

it is a gratuitous gift! thanks God!

more parts

Redemption: (in the large sense)
Christ accomplished the redemption / atonement apart from us.

Justification: Our acceptance of Christ's redemption. grace not works

Sanctification: Life of sanctifying grace, perseverance in Christ and His grace, (Jn 15:1-6) and in the deeds of righteousness, living works, the practice of the virtues, the gifts and fruits of the spirit, prayer, suffering, alms, fasting etc.
grace and works bearing fruit.

Death: in the grace of God. (Mk 13:13 mt 10:22 mt 24:13 rev 2:10)

Purification: pugation from sin and the effects of sin committed after justification.

Glorification: crowned by God.
(rom 8:17 2 tim 2:12)

Full eternal Salvation with God forever in heavenly glory!

eternal life is not eternal salvation

eternal life is the life of God, Christ shares His life with us by grace. Jn 10:10
If believers are given eternal life, then they have eternal salvation; they are one and the same.

Mat 25:46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (ESV)

Do you disagree with Jesus? Was he wrong to use "eternal life" when he clearly means "eternal salvation"?

some of scripture excludes works

some scripture includes works

contradiction? no!
That is far too general and vague. What Scriptures exclude or include works, and in regards to what?

implies that salvation is a multiple part process, some parts we have no participation, some we must participate!
I know; I stated that in my post.

The initial grace of justification:

Justification is a gratuitous gift of God!

No man can merit, or earn grace either by works or by faith

Initial grace by works? no!
by faith? no!
faith alone? no!
No one can merit justification, but it is received by faith, or else Paul is lying:

Rom 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom 5:2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

it is a gratuitous gift! thanks God!
Of course.

Justification: Our acceptance of Christ's redemption. grace not works
The definitions of justification:

G1344
δικαιόω
dikaioō
Thayer Definition:
1) to render righteous or such he ought to be
2) to show, exhibit, evince, one to be righteous, such as he is and wishes himself to be considered
3) to declare, pronounce, one to be just, righteous, or such as he ought to be

Justification as it relates to the one-time event, the first step of salvation, is found in definitions 1 and 3. Once a person is justified, they are saved--they have eternal life and eternal salvation.

(ESV)

if we have justification it is union with God by grace not eternal salvation.

grace can be lost by deadly sin.

and increased by good works

eternal life is not the same as eternal salvation

you cannot lose salvation!

you can lose life!

grace is the life of God that we receive from Christ, (Jn 10:10) and must abide in Christ and bear fruit, (Lk 3:9 & Jn 15:1-6) if we are faithful till death we will enter into eternal salvation. mk 13:13
mt 10:22 mt 24:13 rev 2:10

mk 10:30 and in the world to come eternal life.
