I only started 6 threads, but a recent one I started wasn't noted. Boo! Hiss! I am not good at starting threads... Folks just don't respond. Guess it's just not my talent.

I see. I have noticed that in theological debates there are some who are quick to want to discuss verses and passages that appear to support their position yet they begin evading the minute verses or passages which don't are addressed. I'm not really after trying to best others in debate, but once I get into serious discussions with someone, I want to carry the debate out to the full, and I want the entirety of scripture addressed and accounted for.

When someone starts evading, it tells me one of two things: Either they're trying to save face, or being deliberately dishonest with the word, and while all of us makes mistakes (I make some too), both these reactions tell me they are not the authority in the word they are purporting themselves to be. This then puts me in a position of needing to warn them that they are assuming authority that they really shouldn't, as those who teach are going to receive the greater judgment...

<Sigh> I'm thankful for the good ones, though, and we have a lot of them here. As the scripture says, "Think on that which is of a good report." : )

Just because I may be the one to start a thread, trust me, I do not then feel it is "my thread" and that I own it, or something. I happen to love it when a thread develops a life of its own. I personally think trying to force people to talk only about the OP is foolishness.

I think there's some sort of advertising skill required, but it also seems to be related to the mentality of the group in general. There is a group I belong to where some of the most incomprehensibly idiotic posts get a few hundred responses in just a day or so while the intelligent post gets less than a doze or more (no, I'm not referring to my own posts either). I'm talking about people who have some seriously in depth intelligent posts that get no traction whatsoever. It's bizarre, but then I noticed after reading through some of the lengthy posts that the majority of people are just not able to tackle the more intelligent or insightful posts. They're looking for some sort of emotional release rather than an intelligent conversation.

Someone posts an interesting title, but you have to read what would be a 10 page on paper essay to get the background.

Folks just don't want to invest the time right off the bat. Even if it is brilliant. But you can post, "The Catholic Church is the Whore in Revelations and verse bla bla bla proves it!". And then you can watch the posts flood in.

I suppose emotions have much to do with it.

And the threads you just mentioned are the kind of threads that make me sigh and say.." Oh not another one, we've had of this subject".

If I get bored with the old long ones that keep on going with the same few people...I then go back a few years and read some of the good old discussion threads ..

I ask myself...where did all those good old members go!!

Yet, I just finished such a book for the third time reading it, last week, and I have begun reading it again for the fourth time, Sunday.

But your brain must still be sharp Willie...not speaking of christian books, but even secular and classics ...I used to enjoy Dickens, and reading 'heavy deep devotional' studies...these day I have the attention span of a gnat. I have all my dads lovely old study books he brought over from England ...I kept them believing that 'when I got old' and had more time I would reread them...but half a paragraph is the best I can do these days.

But, I have to praise God that when I flip through them I can still remember what blessing they are ( plus my dad, and myself also, were both addictive 'underliners'. I get blessed reading my old dads coments in the margins.
My hubby has always been satisfied with just his bible and a few commentaries. Different strokes...

But Willie...keep on starting threads .... :)

I will, but since you have pointed out that I get too long-winded in some of them, I will strive for a bit more brevity. (I do believe that "True eloquence consists in saying all that is necessary, but only that which is.")
