Read 1 John 5:1-5. How does this passage echo John Bunyan’s view that, “If you tell people that Christ’s righteousness has been given to them as a gift, and they really believe that, they will do whatever He wants?”

1 John 5

Faith in the Son of God
[sup]1[/sup] Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. [sup]2[/sup] This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. [sup]3[/sup] This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, [sup]4[/sup] for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. [sup]5[/sup] Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

As there are no chapter or verse numbering in the original writings, I think the previous verses helps answer the question...
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
(1Jn 4:16-21)
