I used to drink tea instead of coffee. I suppose I could go back.
About 4 years ago there was a huge disparity between contract price for coffee and the real price paid when Columbia was having civil unrest and Brazil was having a drought, late frost plus the off year altogether. The blatant and obvious manipulation of the commodity exchange was noted....

But they can't fix this year's problem. The manipulators are gonna lose all their money this year. Especially when they have to buy coffee contracts for more than they sold others for. (They play somewhat like options except they must be fulfilled and there's an international exchange rate that is figured into the price too....commodity trading is complicated but lucrative)

The roasters of specialty coffee are going to see a huge spike in green coffee soon.
Green coffee is sold in 60kg bags...sometimes 80kg. (Just depends)

Vietnam is having severe labor issues. Their age demographics is an inverted pyramid. (No children being born at all) death rate is constant and around 75. But the inverted pyramid is the crushing blow to coffee consumers of Robusta beans. (Europe) Traded on the European exchanges.

Americans drink Arabica beans. Grown in Africa, Hawaii, and South America.

Maybe a deal can be worked out for deported people working coffee plantations.

Coffee has been my go to since a child! It was mostly milk and sugar tho...it's an Italian thing.
I always hated tea.
fast forward 6 decades and I now (for a good 8 months) am a tea drinker...course, I have honey and half n half with it. I LOVE it and haven't had any desire for coffee since!
It happened around 8 months back when I was not feeling well. I had zero taste for coffee but actually did have a taste for tea! I tried a couple brands, herbal (yuck, tasted like perfume, ew) also tried Lipton and red rose...meh. I finally found the one I LOVE, Twinning's and have been drinking a couple cups daily. Strange how I went from being such a coffee drinker so quickly!
Coffee just isn't my cup of tea anymore coffee:

Well I am British, so it’s natural for me to drink tea, however Costa coffee has become a go to place. I drink more fruit teas now as well. Not sure I could go without my costa , it’s a treat. I do think it is way too expensive for what it is though. Many more people here are drinking coffee now and the prices have steadily gone up for years, but you can still find a bargain at times x

This is about how much a can of coffee has cost already where I live.

I don't usually have either in the morning, but if I'm going to have something, it's usually Irish breakfast tea. I sometimes make an iced coffee but it's not my first choice.

Same here with the half and half. As I got older, I hate sugary creamers. They all taste gross.

Ocho & Co Sencha Tea online is good. A little steep but you don't need much and if you weigh it out first it lasts.

More of an afternoon tea though, IMO.

Agree the price of coffee, is crazy!
We are heavy coffee drinkers, brewing typically 2-3 pots per day for Two people.

Yaupon holly bush/tree, located primarily in South/eastern US, grows wild, reproduces quickly, AND; the leaves can be brewed into a TEA, the taste is similar to coffee, AND does contain a relatively large portion of Caffeine, as does Coffee.

Have not consumed, but is on our to do list!
And fortunate to have hundreds of these trees on our property to experiment.

Glory to God,

I forgot some people grow some variety of coffee plants in their house as decorative house plants. Don't know how much it produces.

Hi DL,

I am not familiar with that aspect. In coffee plants it’s the “seeds” they brew. Think that would be scant and messy indoors.

A Tea uses leaves, as you know. The Yaupon “seeds” / “berries”, are bright red, pretty, bird food, not for human consumption, but can be used for holiday decorations. (also to note, the bark is smooth, nearly white and they grow incredibly fast.)

God Bless you.

Glory to God,

We had anticipated inflation some years back and put back much tea and coffee (tea bags, freeze dried, instant, and drip). So we are still going on the much lower prices from way back (the current date in our rotation is 2022). And I am actually glad we did that because of the current prices. I thought, surely this will not taste the best after all this time but we are drinking it currently and its perfectly fine to us. Now we will buy it only on sale and buy as many as we have gone through (at that time). I switch between coffee and tea daily depending on what I might be in the mood for.

If you really like tea, and things are a little tight, try dandelion root tea, its free, harvest as many as you can while the dandelions can be found. And you know, Grampa's Weeder makes digging them up a breeze, especially if you have some years on your back.

Its the coffee arabica plant they grow. They're pretty and smaller, but I've never looked into it myself.

I think that it's too challenging for me.

Just throwing this out there, I can't remember where I read it, but I think it was from a book called Unvanquished: How Women of the South Survived the Civil War.

When coffee was hard to get, they used chicory roots.

How cool is that , so is there a process between growing and making the tea from the leaves, or is it just literally taking the leaves and grounding them down, or infusing them?
I sometimes have a cup of tea with a coffee taste, but it’s because my son makes A cup of coffee at the same time as my tea and uses the same spoon to stir both cups !!! lol

I just ordered a second tub of this g-fuel.

I figured I would share. I don’t use coffee because idk i typically drink to much.

I have one serving of this a day typically before getting to work.

I also love sweet tea, but coffee can really make me mean.

It's a type of cherry that grows on a bush....not really a formal tree at all....almost like a vine but more of a messy bush.

The pit of the cherry is the "bean". And it requires a substantial bit of processing to make the green coffee. Water processing or manual cherry removal also determines flavor. Mucilage from cherry remaining on the bean is also a determining factor. Green cherries or rotten cherries make bad coffee.

That's why specialty coffee is much more expensive than institutional coffee. Hand picked vx machine harvested. Then small batch roasted according to flavor profiles exclusive to that particular year's harvest.

Institutional coffee is on a continuous roasting cycle (production roasting like bread baking....conveyor belts) and roasted to the point just before second crack....almost all the flavor is gone except for the bitter flavors. (Starbucks, Folgers, Pete's, 8 O' Clock and etc) This helps overcome the inevitable green and rotten coffee cherries picked by the harvester.

Yes, people whine about the cost of specialty coffee sold in coffee shops. But a million things can and do go wrong when brewing great coffee.....but when done right in a specialty coffee shop....miles better cup of coffee. (Milk not required)
Most people put too much sugar, flavors, and milk to notice the difference between inferior vx superior coffee. That's why Starbucks has gone to institutional beans and all automated expresso shots. (No craft left to espresso shots there)

So that's why your small independent coffee shop has great coffee and high costs. It's there primarily as a service....not to make $$.
