If you listen to his briefing a reporter asked him why he suggested that and he said it was a sarcastic comment. That's one thing I pray about hard...that he will stop using rhetoric that the press uses against him.
On of the biggest blunders made by Trump over this pandemic is having those daily briefings. That is called SELF-SABOTAGE, and he has had a habit of sabotaging himself over and over again since taking office, even though he knows that the media hate him.
1. He should have issued a COMPREHENSIVE Executive Order on February 1 to cover absolutely every aspect of how the government would deal with this emergency (including the protection of civil rights from government overreach).
2. After a proper presidential response from the Oval Office at the beginning, he need not have said another word, and definitely not had daily arguments with reporters. That is demeaning for a President.
3. He could have appointed Dr. Ben Carson -- who is smart, cool, and black -- and also a Christian, to handle the crisis and head up the Task Force, which would be limited to those who stand with Trump. If necessary Pence could have complemented Carson.
4. He should have fired Fauci and Birx as soon as their grotesque projections were seen to be nonsensical, and as soon as Fauci started contradicting him publicly. He is still hanging on to these people which shows tremendous weakness.
5. He should have immediately ordered an investigation into the funding of coronavirus research in China with American dollars when the news broke out about the Wuhan lab, and shut down all funding to all foreign entities for all purposes, regardless.
6. He should have VETOED that stimulus bill and sent it back for major revisions which would remove all the padding and all the pork inserted by the evil Democrats. He could have also instructed McConnell to do everything in his power to prevent Pelosi etc from sabotaging the funding. They have a "Nuclear Option" in the Senate, but they fail to use it, and always buckle under the Democrats.
