You see those things will happen as a result of preaching the gospel of the kingdom. It was the reason why Christians were pericuted back then. It is one of the reasons why it is was easy for Emperor Nero to use Christians as a scap-goat after the fire he statred in Rome. They (Christians) back then were all preaching about a kindom that would take over all the kingdoms of this world........they were not loyal to the Roman government so they were viewed with suspicion. We can't say the same for many Christians today expecially those in the U.S. In the U.S they are more rapped up in politics than they are in proclaming that God is going to set up His kingdom on this Earth........they think they are going to Heaven.
Study Acts 2 and Peter's reference to Joel 2. THAT's what that event Christ gave in Matt.24 is about. It's for the last days, which is what the 5th Seal of Revelation is pointing to.
To be more plain, THAT future witness is about the 'cloven tongue' by The Holy Spirit manifesting to ALL nations when they're delivered up during the coming tribulation. God is going to speak to the whole world through them. Thusly, that was not about Christians in Roman history, for their days are past.
This is where Peter was quoting from in the Book of Joel on Pentecost day regarding the 'cloven tongue' that everyone present heard in the very dialect of the town where they were born...
Joel 2:28-32
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
(KJV)
Those verses in bold are specifically about the time of the end just prior to Christ's second coming.
