In 2 Thessalonians 2, Apostle Paul taught of the event of "a falling away" that is to happen first, prior to our Lord Jesus' coming and gathering of the Church.

    2 Thess 2:3-4
    3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
    KJV

The Greek word is apostasia (Strong's no. 646) and it's where our English word apostasy comes from. It means to forsake what one held to, becoming an apostate. And the object of the cause Apostle Paul gives is the worship of that false one, the "man of sin" and his sitting in the temple of God exalting himself over all that is called God or that is worshiped, i.e., the very sin that Satan did in the beginning.

That falling away to worship that false one instead is Paul's real subject in that chapter, and is what the "strong delusion" is that he speaks of in verse 11...

    2 Thess 2:11-12
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
    KJV

Paul's first warning there again was what? "Let no man deceive you by any means:". Deceive you into what? Into falling away to worship that coming false one by his working of all power of signs and lying wonders per verse 9. Those signs and wonders were another warning our Lord Jesus gave about the coming pseudo-Christ in Matthew 24:23-26. He warned the Church again through Apostle John in Revelation 13:11-14 about the "another beast" that will come working miracles and make fire come to down on earth in the sight of men.

So what is the "lie" that Paul said God is sending the unrighteous? It is the lie of that false one coming to Jerusalem to play Messiah, and by the power of miracles he will be given to perform, it will cause many brethren to fall away in false worship to him as God, instead of waiting on our Lord Jesus' coming afterwards to destroy him with the 'spirit of His mouth', as per verse 8.

Thus that great falling away is NOT yet happened today. It is hard-linked to the time of that coming false one exalting himself as Messiah in Jerusalem.

We do see plenty of apostasy around us today.
But the great apostasy that Paul prophesies of, will be the Christian peoples, then all living in all of the holy Land, who are approached by the Leader of the One World Government, to make a 7 year treaty of peace with them. Daniel 9:27a
The 'many' are those who agree to this treaty instead of relying on God for their protection. They are the ones who 'violate the Covenant', Daniel 11:32 and Isaiah 28:14-15
These two groups of Christians are also seen in Zechariah 14:2 and in Revelation 12:14 & 17

I believe this already happened and the Papacy is the Antichrist from about the 9th century on.

You are 100% correct! I preach the same all the time!
Consider this, the mark of the beast is going to bring the "falling away first", and it won't be "religious" in any way. In fact it will appeal to "the natural man".

After their orchestrated " Chaos" is in full swing, the purpose of it is to line up everyone for their one world government.
So then, who will have faith then? Only born again Christians, and that's all. All others will have sold out their "birthright" for food and paying the bills (remember Esau).
The mark will be directly tied in with your "digitized" bank account.
No mark? Then no access to your account!

Yes, peace on earth sounds so right doesn't it?
But that's NOT what Jesus said!
Luke 12[51] Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

Nope! You will never see the words "THE" Antichrist in the KJV. It's always understood in the plural. In fact, as much as you understand that "the natural man" is in the plural, so also the words "that man of sin" are to be read in the plural (KJV only).
Hear what the Spirit is saying, and not the religious dogma of the day is!

Did you know that there was "the son of perdition" , before Paul spoke of it? Yes, it was Judas Iscariot.
    Unfortunately not many know why!!
Here is a clue: Rom. 8:9

Question: did Judas die before or after Pentecost?
And now you know WHY Jesus said that he was "the son of perdition".
The correct answer is: without the Holy Spirit, Judas was "none of his", and everyone who is "none of his" is destined to destruction (perdition). Rom. 8:9.

Now, as you read up on 2 Thes. Ch. 2, be sure to understand that the temple spoken of there, is our bodies, of which Jesus clearly mentions as being so- John 2:21
There are many today who are void of the Holy Spirit, and therefore " the natural man" has full residency within them, being quite literally, "that man of sin, the son of perdition (destruction)".

You need to study this issue and not just "wing it". Virtually all of the reformation era creeds identified the Papacy as the Antichrist and some also in the post reformation era.

I am very aware of the history of how the " religious" of the churches have formed their analytically studied views. Unfortunately they all have neglected to understand it by His Spirit. Isa. 55:8-9.

So, what is with the "eye" at the end of certain titles of topics for discussion? Who is watching who?

Dave, there is no "THE" Antichrist to come!
All of that is a gross misunderstanding of Daniel about the "little horn" and the "70 weeks".
To understand that correctly, you must only read what the angel Gabriel interprets. He is the authority. Iows, DON'T read the visions with the interpretation.
    DON'T!!

The crucial element here is to KNOW your Ancient History, and to read the account of that era in Maccabees. It goes hand and hand with Daniel.
By and large, Rev. Has very little to do with it.

There was only one "little horn" ever to come, and he was Antiochus Epiphanes of the Seleucid Empire, which was one of "four horns" of the Hellenistic kingdoms (greece-the 3rd beast). It was he who conducted "the abomination of desolation".
There is no " little horn" in the 4th beast. However, as the 4th beast came to be, so also was Antiochus rising "among them", but IN THE 3rd beast. Please read and study KJV ONLY!! And leave your " religious" commentaries alone!

I must warn you, that you will be hard pressed to discern what has been revealed to me.
Your mind will go ballistic, with trying to take it in, while your pet doctrines "of end times" try to contend with it.

Because of the many false interpretations of many years, the fallacy of "THE Antichrist is even entrenched in the minds of the UNsaved.
Even they are aware of the many sideways, corkscrew interpretations, so much so, that even THEIR views are runner up for being equal to what the churches have fabricated.
    .
If you continue with me, you will even learn that there is no numerical "666" , and for all who promote it as such, have not learned that the words "six hundred threescore and six" (KJV) is ONLY A REFERENCE to 1 Kings 10:14, of which is about how much gold a certain "wise" "man" freely received in one year.
Gold is what to us today?
    Ans. Money.

    A rhetorical question:
    what's your "annual salary"?

Now go and Google " Universal Basic Income", and learn what that is all about.

When the mark of the beast is manifested and enacted upon, it will be then that many shall fall away from faith.
Listen to Jesus of how many!
Luke.18[8] I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
    > Jesus is concerned that He might not find faith on the earth! It is a clue to us to know, mainly because even He did not know the time of His return. Thus, with Him saying that, we need to pay attention to watch for that which shall come " first".
The mark of the beast will do that for sure! Many will "fall away" from faith.

Faith among people in the world is going to be extremely scant, and it's NOT because of people not going to church!!
Through the mark of the beast, all their needs will be attainable. Who will then need faith in God to meet their needs, never mind to believe in Jesus?

If it quacks, and walks like a duck, it is probably a duck. The same is true of the biblical description of the man of sin/Antichrist, and the Papacy from about the 9th century on. But you need to study the bible to know this.

It won't just be in the holy land...

    Rev 13:4-8
4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

    KJV

That's what Churches on the Preterist or Historicist doctrines of men hold to. But those doctrines simply are not preparing their congregations for the coming great tribulation by the coming pseudo-Messiah that our Lord Jesus and His Apostles forewarned His Church about for the last generation that will see His 2nd coming. As a matter of fact, the doctrine of Full Preterism wrongly teaches that Jesus' 2nd coming already happened back in the Apostles days, saying it was a 'spiritual' coming and was not meant to be a literal physical bodily return.

This is a sign in itself of the condition of the professing church today, they are indeed a "Luke warm" church as our Lord implied they would be completely lacking in spiritual understanding, "asleep" to the "times and the seasons".

Such are in serious danger and susceptible to the various deceptions soon to transpire.
