Why did Jesus answer questions by asking questions?

Jesus sometimes answered questions by asking questions. That technique carries the risk of being considered rude, or worse.

Jesus is a masterful teacher. He wasn’t being rude, or worse.

So why did he sometimes answer questions by asking questions? What was he trying to accomplish by utilizing that teaching technique?

Answering a question with a question establishes a baseline of what one believes, because we are more inclined to believe our own answer rather than any answer given.

In this same way, Jesus also asked who people said that He was. Their various answers (including Peter's answer) was a statement or testimony of what each believed.
