SWIFT BACKLASH AFTER TRUMP SUGGESTS DELAYING ELECTION

“With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history,” the president argued in an 8:46 a.m. tweet that was still pinned to the top of his profile early Thursday evening. “It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”

In response, top lawmakers on both sides of the political spectrum doled out soundbites opposing the move.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in an interview with a radio station in his home state of Kentucky that the date of the election is set in stone.

Trump reacts to firestorm over suggestion of election delay, cites risks from mail-in voting

He's losing, and he doesn't know what to do. And he's going to get crazier and crazier, as November approaches.

Federalist Society co-founder says Trump’s tweet about postponing the election is grounds for ‘immediate impeachment’

Federalist Society co-founder Stephen Calabresi said that President Trump’s tweet suggesting to postpone the election is “fascistic” and “grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment.”

“Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats’ assertion that President Trump is a fascist,” Calabresi wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times. “But this latest tweet is fascistic and is itself grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment again by the House of Representatives and his removal from office by the Senate.”

Calabresi noted that he has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1980, including for Trump in 2016.

"Fascist" is such an old-fashioned word. They call it "Illiberal democracy", now.
It's interesting that Fox News carried the story. The story I posted was also from Fox. I saw the link to it when I went to read the story you posted. Fox seems to be putting some distance between itself and Trump. Someone at the Federalist also wanted to be clear that being conservative doesn't mean being a fascist.

There are degrees of fascism. I think Trump just went beyond the limits of the craziest authoritarian republican in Congress.

Oh dear, looks like every Democrat head has been summarily triggered. Even though mail in fraud in voting is a proven thing, doesn't matter. Democrats want it, and the slightest suggestion they won't get their way I hear the slamming doors, the fists against walls, and the stamping of feet all the way from here.

Trump, for example votes that way. You see, absentee ballots (which Trump claims are find) are mail-in ballots.

Washington State’s Attorney General Prepped In March To Sue If Trump Tried To Delay The Election. Trump’s Campaign Called It “The Dumbest Thing.”
Washington Prepared To Sue If Trump Delays Election

They were onto him from the start.
Yes, Biden talked about it back in April. Here's a link to the story which has the date the story ran.

April 24, 2020 Joe Biden says Trump will 'try to kick back the election' in November

Former Vice President Joe Biden suggested Thursday that President Donald Trump may try to delay the election in November in order to win.

During the question and answer portion of a virtual fundraiser with former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Biden told supporters, "I think he (Trump) is gonna try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it can’t be held."

Trump has not suggested he would push back the election, and the date of the election is set in federal law. Congress sets the "times, places, and manner" of elections," meaning only Congress would be able to change the date of the election.

Referencing current controversy over funding for the U.S. Postal Service, Biden said, "he’s going to do all he can to make it very hard for people to vote. That’s the only way he thinks he can possibly win.”

I think that Trump would try to delay the election if he could. I know of no constitutional provision delaying a national election. Is such a thing constitutionally plausible?

Of course, delaying an election at will by a President would mean the ending of elections, if an unpopular President doesn't want to face an election. An unpopular President would never have to face the voters by constitutional means.

I don't know that mail-in voting is any more dangerous than in-person voting. I recall reading articles about how computer systems used in voting machines were hackable. I don't know if that was true; but I know the last time I voted, there was no paper trail. For all I know, the election officials could have been voting again and again before they opened. Who would know when it was all electronic?

As for the Republican-Democrat thing, I think you might be surprised how many Republicans are in favor of mail-in voting. The people who elected them like the idea, and Republicans in Congress reflect the wishes of the people who elected them. They are not backing up Trump on this since he's being silly and making accusations without evidence. If you are tuned in to some right-wing Trump-supporting site, they'll be pumping the "mail in fraud" thing; but I don't think most Republicans in Congress believe that. Trump is like a sinking ship, and don't be surprised if you start seeing more and more Republicans trying to get off that sinking ship before it goes down.

Trump made a statement that made me laugh out loud.

Trump faces rare rebuke from GOP for floating election delay

"I don't want to delay. I want to have the election. But I also don't want to wait for three months and then find out that the ballots are all missing, and the election doesn't mean anything," Trump said, warning of the possibility of "a crooked election."
So which is it? Can he tolerate waiting by postponing the election but can't tolerate delay because of problems counting the results?

Trump would be smart to read the Constitution to see what his job is, then do it to the best of his ability and stop thinking he can rewrite laws as he pleases. Making such an outlandish suggestion makes him look either stupid or like someone who wants to be a petty dictator. We have never delayed an election for any reason yet, and there is no reason to start subverting the rule of law now.

President Donald Trump repeatedly tests the Republican Party's limits on issues including race, trade and immigration. Now he has struck a boundary.

GOP officials from New Hampshire to Mississippi to Iowa quickly pushed back against Trump's suggestion on Thursday that it might be necessary to delay the November election — which he cannot do without congressional approval — because of the unfounded threat of voter fraud. They reassured voters that the election would proceed on the constitutionally mandated day as it has for more than two centuries.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley was especially blunt: "All I can say is, it doesn't matter what one individual in this country says. We still are a country based on the rule of law, and we want to follow the law."

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu vowed his state would hold its November elections as scheduled: "End of story." Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., who leads the House Republican Conference, said, "The resistance to this idea among Republicans is overwhelming."

The top Republicans in the House and Senate, who have spent the past four years championing Trump in Congress, also distanced themselves from the notion of a delayed election.

Trump floats election delay, congressional Republicans reject idea

Multiple congressional Republicans - including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and top House of Representatives Republican Kevin McCarthy - rejected the idea.

"Never in the history of the federal elections have we ever not held an election and we should go forward with our election," said McCarthy.
Part of the reason for Trump making this suggestion might be to distract from the abysmal financial news.

Trump's statement on Twitter comes as the United States is enduring the greatest crises of a generation: a coronavirus pandemic that has claimed more than 150,000 lives, a crippling recession sparked by the outbreak, and nationwide protests against police violence and racism. On Thursday morning, the government reported the worst U.S. economic contraction since the Great Depression: 32.9% in the second quarter.
See how Trump can distract people's attention? We just had the worse economic contraction since the Great Depression, but Trump has people talking about delaying the election.

Yeah, who does he think he is anyway, President Xi?

Hey if Communist China can delay elections in Hong Kong for a year, maybe Trump should be given an extra year in office so we have time to prepare to vote.

Hong Kong postpones legislative elections over coronavirus fears - CNN

Hong Kong will postpone legislative elections due to be held in September by one year because of the coronavirus outbreak, the city's leader said Friday.

In a news conference, Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the move to postpone the Legislative Council elections, slated for September 6, was the most difficult decision she had made in the last seven months. She added that she had the support of the Chinese central government in making this decision.

Lam said the delay was needed to protect public health and guarantee fairness in the election.

That is probably his reasoning; but if the election is in doubt, he ceases to be President at noon, January 20, 2021 and Pence ceases to be Vice President. Nancy Pelosi would take over as acting President until the mess got sorted out. He might not enjoy what happens if he resists. I've been watching Pelosi for years. She can be nice, very nice, but she can also be tough, very tough. She was talking about fumigating the White House if need be. I was wondering if she meant she'd use pepper spray if necessary.

July 20, 2020 Pelosi says Trump will be 'fumigated out' if he refuses to leave after White House loss

The top U.S. Democrat said on Monday that Donald Trump might not like the outcome of the Nov. 3 presidential election but reminded the Republican president that he will have to vacate the White House if he loses.

“There is a process. It has nothing to do with if the certain occupant of the White House doesn’t feel like moving and has to be fumigated out of there because the presidency is the presidency,” House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an interview with MSNBC.

The military would back her up if need be. They would not obey any orders given by Trump that are unlawful and certainly no orders after noon, January 20, 2021 if the results of the Electoral College were still in question. They won't be in question. Trump may like to talk about voter fraud in California and so on, but the truth is he's going to lose California anyway. It wouldn't matter a bit if they added millions of votes for Biden. California's result won't be in question. He lost by 30% in 2016 -- what's it matter if it's 20% or 40% this year. He'd still get zero electoral votes.

My own tally is close to what I find on other sites: Biden 353, Trump 185. There are some states where Biden's lead isn't that big. If Trump could swing things 5% to his side away from Biden, he could pick up 65 votes. Biden would still win 288 - 250.

Trump's problem may be holding onto the states where he now has a slim lead: Alaska, Iowa, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas. If things shift 5% towards Biden in those states, Biden could pick up another 72 giving the result Biden 425, Trump 113. It's safe to predict some of the results from those five states may be in question for some time; but it won't matter since Biden would win even if Trump kept them all in his camp.

Republicans are fed up with Trump. The writing is on the wall, and Republicans know it. They expect Trump to lose, that's almost a given. So Republican leaders are more interested in how things go in Congress. McConnell is worried Democrats may take control over the Senate. So when we see McConnell contradicting the President, it tells us he thinks it a good idea not to be too chummy with Trump.

Republicans also aren't going to give Trump things he want included in the next stimulus package. They can already be accused of wasteful spending, and Trump wants more wasteful spending at a time of record debt and deficits. He wants $377 million to remodel the West Wing of the White House. What's that have to do with coronavirus? He also wants (make sure you're sitting down when you read this) $1.75 billion to build a new FBI building -- across the street from the Trump Hotel.

Senate GOP coronavirus relief package includes $1.75 billion for new FBI headquarters near Trump hotel

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said on Monday that the project is in the bill "so that the president -- nobody could build a hotel across the street."
. . . .
"That makes no sense to me," said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsay Graham, R-S.C.

"I just don't get it," said Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla.

"Even if the White House wanted it, I'd be against it because it's certainly not necessary," Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., said Tuesday.

"I am opposed to non-germane amendments," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on Tuesday after the Senate GOP weekly luncheon. "When we get to the end of the process I would hope that all of the non-COVID measures are out, no matter what bills they were in at the start."

McConnell was unaware on Monday that the provision made its way into the Senate GOP bill and told reporters to ask the Trump administration about it.

Several are facing close elections and are afraid Trump is going to hurt their chances. Can you imagine what Democrats would say about anyone who voted to include spending in the virus bill to remodel the White House and to build a new FBI building? They would say something like, "They voted to remodel the White House while refusing to give people the help they needed to . . . .." (fill in the blanks). Some Republicans secretly despise Trump too, so they love it when he proposes crazy stuff because then they can oppose him without losing too many votes from Trump supporters.

Under what statute is a sitting president removed from office until an election scandal is settled? No it would be war.

The statute that ends his term at the end of January. Unless he's elected to another term, that's it. In the absence of an elected president, Nancy Pelosi would become president.

No it would be war.

Unlikely. Few of his followers have the manhood to die for him.

We will see how that goes if a scandal occurs due to democrat malfeasance.
