The world is overpopulated based on the amount of resources the Earth has and can produce. It really has little to do with how many people can fit on the planet
That may be so with China but not so in my country of Australia. USA has approx 318 million people in approximately the same area as Australia which has 23 million people. We have millions of hectares that are unpopulated and many people don't want to go to the outback to live. Unless the government decentralises its public servant workforce to the outback, it is unlikely that Aussies will want to live in other than the scenic rim.

However, this is NOT an overpopulated country and we produce many more resources than we ever use - hence the export trade.

Overpopulation suggests that there is not enough room, resources, or proper governance for the number of people in any given area or the planet. But other factors intrude in the notion of overpopulation or of claiming overpopulation. We see this in the managing of wildlife in our national parks and government land. Many species are on the brink of extinction are what an elephant or spotted owl may consider the overpopulation of humans expanding into their territory. Human encroachment into the wild to find more living space and resources is a direct threat to the survival of much flora and fauna. But that is not the point I am trying to make.

Capitalism and the worldly present their side of overpopulation by money, property, and prestige. Not a soul in the world would go hungry a single day or for the rest of their lives if global economics did not rule. It is not that there are too many mouths to feed and we need to start restraining population growth to make ends meet. We need to be expanding our hearts with a root in social justice, not profit. I am not against profit or capitalism per se. I do not see Big Business as necessarily evil. What is corrupt is the mind-set that sees storing or burning surplus wheat or whatever as just sound economic policy adding to the lie of overpopulation. Blaming the victim. If "they" would just stop over-producing children world hunger would disappear. Yet even if we got down to a half dozen or so people, the complaint would be the same.
