Overpopulation suggests that there is not enough room, resources, or proper governance for the number of people in any given area or the planet. But other factors intrude in the notion of overpopulation or of claiming overpopulation. We see this in the managing of wildlife in our national parks and government land. Many species are on the brink of extinction are what an elephant or spotted owl may consider the overpopulation of humans expanding into their territory. Human encroachment into the wild to find more living space and resources is a direct threat to the survival of much flora and fauna. But that is not the point I am trying to make.
Capitalism and the worldly present their side of overpopulation by money, property, and prestige. Not a soul in the world would go hungry a single day or for the rest of their lives if global economics did not rule. It is not that there are too many mouths to feed and we need to start restraining population growth to make ends meet. We need to be expanding our hearts with a root in social justice, not profit. I am not against profit or capitalism per se. I do not see Big Business as necessarily evil. What is corrupt is the mind-set that sees storing or burning surplus wheat or whatever as just sound economic policy adding to the lie of overpopulation. Blaming the victim. If "they" would just stop over-producing children world hunger would disappear. Yet even if we got down to a half dozen or so people, the complaint would be the same.
