Most will be familiar with the OT record of the life and times of Ahab and his wife Jezebel. The adulterous and harlot spirit of Jezebel is repeated in the guise of Babylon the Great in the final days before the second coming. You may read of this in 1 Kings 16:29 through to her death 2 Kings 9:37, and her spiritual counterpart in Revelation 2:20. Connected to Jezebel were the false prophets of Baal. This pagan collection of misfits had the ear of the secular power in the form of Ahab, and influenced the king to instigate false worship in the nation.
In Daniel we see the same thing taking place in chapter 3, with the erection of the statue and false worship commanded, and again with regards prayer in Daniel 6, all at the influence of a pagan priesthood having power over the state.
Another interesting one is John the Baptist being put to death by the state after being influenced by an evil "mother and daughter".
Revelation 13 reveals this pagan practice of church/state union being repeated, this time a harlot Babylon the Great (the church) riding the beast (state power) influencing the state to instigate false worship. This is a global spiritual occurrence, not a literal local event. The question is, as we interpret the prophecies, what nation is it that is first influenced by the church to do this (the beast coming up out of the earth) and what entity does the beast rising up out of the sea represent? Ought we be concerned at the coterie of religious advisors hovering around the POTUS in light of past history that has thus far never revealed any union of church and state as being to the advantage of the people of God? One could also ask why is it that the counsel and wisdom of the founding fathers of the US is not being taken into account by anyone in power...it seems they are paying only lip service to the constitution and the intents of such as Jefferson and Madison and their warnings against giving the church even the slightest influence over state affairs.

Did not an apostate church influence the state to crucify Jesus? How often did the established church during the dark ages influence the state to execute 'heretics'?
