The question was asked concerning the righteousness of God. In John it is written

8 "When he comes, he will show that the world is wrong about sin, about righteousness and about judgment -- 9 about sin, in that people don't put their trust in me; 10 about righteousness, in that I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 about judgment, in that the ruler of this world has been judged.

Romans 1:17 For in it is revealed how God makes people righteous in his sight; and from beginning to end it is through trust - as the Tanakh puts it, "But the person who is righteous will live his life by trust."

It is interesting that "righteousness" goes with Christ. He came to earth to reveal God's full righteousness, which was only in part demonstrated in the saints. Though we can have the righteousness of God in and operating through us, we also exhibit rebellion against God and sin.

So Christ had to come down to earth to reveal the full and unspoiled righteousness of God in order to judge all sin on earth. And it shows us that true righteousness comes by conforming to him, through which we also obtain his mercy.

We are God’s workmanship and what he has started in us he is faithful and just to finish it.

Jesus speaking:

Matthew 5
[20] For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven

And how is that accomplished in your religious beliefs ?

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven
We can add this verse to the above: Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. (Mt 5:48)

So not only must our righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, but it must equal the perfection of God the Father! So how in the world can a human being who is a sinner by birth and by choice ever reach this standard of perfection?

The Bible does give us the answer, and the answer is found in JUSTIFICATION. God justifies -- declares righteous -- the one who repents and believes wholeheartedly in Christ and His finished work of redemption. See Romans 4 and 5.

Therefore, for anyone to enter Heaven, he or she must be robed or clothed with the righteousness of Christ Himself. This is a supernatural act of the grace of God and is purely on the merits of Christ Himself, and what He accomplished in His death, burial and resurrection.

In the parable of the Marriage Feast the king asked one guest why he did not have on the wedding garment. That wedding garment symbolizes the righteousness of Christ, yet it is also called "the righteousness of saints" (Rev 19:8), since the saints are all IN CHRIST.

What did Jesus say in verse 19?

Matthew 5
[19] Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

And this cannot be disregarded. However, it will not make us as righteous as God. Only God can do that by His grace with the righteousness of Christ upon us.

God made a righteousness for mankind to walk in. Again, back to verse 20.

Here is what Paul wrote to the Galatians:
“O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

now Peter wrote about the same thing. When he said “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
