Many people have heard about the the aerial gathering of the church described in Paul's first letter to the Thessalonian church, which is an event when all Christian believers who are alive, along with resurrected believers, will rise in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Many mainline churches understand this event as the general resurrection of the saints, taking place at the second coming of Christ to inaugurate the eternal age.
Other Christians hold the rapture doctrine, affirming that Jesus will snatch the church away from the earth before the world suffers a seven year tribulation. Differing viewpoints exist about the exact timing of the Rapture. Will Christ's return occur in one event or two?
