Is it because he has not creativity to plot his own course in his contest with God? Or does he admire everything God does and wants to replicate it? Or does he need to stay in lock-step with God's actions or else he'll be wiped out?

I think the key to understanding why satan rebelled is found at Mat 4:8,9 Friend, it makes it easy to see he wanted what Jehovah had. No doubt the Bible will prove true, and satan will come to his demise for his rebellion.

He tried once to overthrow God's throne in heaven but the Angels of God made war with Lucifer and his one third backing of angels, and God overcame them,the angels were reserved in chains in darkness until judgment. Satan was cast down to earth,void, unformed without life on it in darkness.

Lucifer enjoys it. As do plenty of men in their false doctrines. They get intellectual stimulation out of it.

My best guess is that Satan wants to be worshiped. That would be the long and the short of it. And he is most subtle (Genesis 3:1) in how he goes about trying to force us all to worship him.
He seeks to deceive. So he seeks to replicate God's actions. Appearing as an angel of light, and having a form of righteousness, but denying the power thereof.
Within the love of Christ our Saviour
Our Lord and Head.
