The Legalist is up on the Cross hanging by one nail, while he tries to chop down the Cross with his Self Righteous Axe, using the other hand.
Jesus, meanwhile,.... is no where to be found in their Faith... as He has already been on the Cross and left it, having finished His redemptive work 2000 yrs ago when He walked out of the Tomb, Glorified.

Legalism is the enemy of the Cross, pretending to be "real" Christianity.
Legalism is anything you are trying to do, to keep yourself in God's favor. (self saving).(legalist).

Now a person says.... but aren't we to do good works, and live holy.. ??????????????????
YES. = ALL THE TIME.
But there is a distinction that the Legalist, who mind is blinded and controlled by the devil, cannot understand.
What the Legalist can never understand is that all deeds, self effort, commandment keeping, church membership, penance, confessing sin, repenting, Torah keeping, enduring to the end, and carrying your Cross by denying yourself, could NOT save you before God saved you, so, how can all that DOING keep you saved?
How can what CAN'T SAVE YOU, Keep you Saved?
A.) It can't.

The legalist cannot understand what i just wrote....
They can only hear it through the mind of deception whereby any attempt to lead them from their self righteousness and INTO the TRUE "gift of Salvation" Grace of God, is perceive by the deceived as = "License to sin or Cheap Grace".

Jude and Paul both teach that there are many heretics always running around, both saved and unsaved who teach, preach, and believe that what YOU DO is WHY God will keep you saved.
If this is you, then you are "in the Flesh", according to Paul, (Galatians).
Jude and Paul teach that if this is your thinking and your theology, you are either not born again, or you are "fallen from Grace".

Salvation is God's Love Gift.
It can't be earned, and it can't be kept by you.
God started your salvation in you, when you were born again, and God Himself will be faithful to complete it.

Amen !

Its the leaven of the self righteous pharisees which Jesus condemned. Those who teach the false doctrine of sinless perfectionism. The Holier than thou type who point out the splinters in others all the while being blinded by their GIANT plank in their own eyes. Those who are blinded by the lie in themselves claiming to become sinless. Its the way of the hypocrite. Matthew 23.

They "clean" themselves up on the outside(self righteous) yet on the inside are filled with pride, envy, loathing others, condemnation, demeaning others, earing them down nor building them up, no fruit of the spirit evident as we read in Galatians 5 and 1 Corinthians 13- void of loving others as Christ has loved them, warts and all. etc.......

@Christophany Good to remember also that the law was changed (Hebrews 7.12) and what we now have is better than the law (Hebrews 7.19).

yes the gatekeepers of the law, those religious folks who don't understand grace, love, forgiveness and forgiving others as Christ has forgiven them. They hold any sin against them all the while expecting the forgiveness and benefits of the Cross for themselves. Its 100% pure hypocrisy of the self righteous pharisees. Its a disgrace, a cancer in the body, a stumbling block they hang over the weaker brother causing them to stumble.

The Sign of the Legalist, is that they worry about "keeping the law" as if this is what they are supposed to do, that pleases God.......they believe.
Its not.
Law-keeping, is related to trying to meet requirements imposed on the LOST, unregenerate.
So, if you are "under the law", you would worry about keeping it.
This would be any lost person, any non-born again person, as they believe that "if i live right", which is to keep the law, then "God is happy with me".
They understand God's requirements as non-Grace related, as they have no revelation of the Grace of God, so all they do is bark and rant about LAW LAW LAW keeping.
If you find a Christian doing the same, you are dealing with a Heretic, or you are dealing with a fake Christian.

This is also the mind set of the carnal believer who has fallen from Grace. They believe, they THINK< that by keeping the law, they are pleasing God.
They are not.
They believe that to keep the law is to be a good disciple.
This is also false.

The devil's theology, is...."keep the law, save thyself".
God's Grace is....>"you are not under the law, you are under Grace" so, to please Me, is to walk in the Spirit, which is to have the mind of Christ, which is to understand that I have placed you into MY OWN SPIRIT, which has released you from the Law.
Legalism: is the combining of law and grace into a hybrid false theology that ruins many Christians for life.

A Christian is RELEASED from the "dominion of the Law".
The Legalist, does not understand this, and that is why the Law is to them,= the way.
IT isn't.
Its actually the way you fall from Grace......if you pursue it.
If you are a believer who is pursuing the law to try to please God, the law has you under its dominion and it will empower your FLESH to SIN MORE.
All Legalists are sinning and confessing obsessives.

To live a holy life, is not related to keeping the law, or keeping the Torah.
A Holy life is the life that Jesus lives through you, because you are IN CHRIST, .. .and that is totally related to "bearing much Spiritual Fruit".
Jesus said "apart from me" you can do nothing.
And He means, that apart from Grace you are fallen from the Root.
He means that if you are trying to keep the law to stay saved, you are in opposition to the Cross and in disagreement with the Blood Atonement.
The deceived Legalist believes that spiritual fruit is law keeping.
This is deception, as Spiritual Fruit is to exist within right believing, which is to walk in the Spirit, having the mind of Christ.
Faith is the opposite of Law Keeping.

Jesus fulfilled the law, which releases the true born again FROM the Law.
The Legalist cannot see this truth, and in fact they will resist this Truth.
Or as Jesus teaches through Paul....."you are (the born again) NOT UNDER the Law".
So, when a Legalist teaches the Law, as discipleship, or how to please God, they are actually teaching the Gospel of Satan,.... as the Devil is all about the Law as he cannot teach anything else, and neither can his deceived.

And lets take it even further...

See, what heretic's call "easy believism" is the devil's lie.
The devil is the author of self righteousness and self saving.
Its the devil who blinds the mind and creates an alternative to Grace = as "logical".
The issue with this type of mind blinded thinking is that the Spiritual, is not logic based.. its Faith based and its hope based and it GRACE Based.

Jude teaches something that every believer has to comprehend so that they are not deceived by a Legalist.
Its this..
The devil teaches that the true idea of the Grace of God, is "license to sin".
Jude and Paul say that the evil one has cleverly used man's self righteousness against their own understanding of how the Grace of God operates as a FREE GIFT.
Simply put, the devil's theology switches God's Grace into legalism by convincing believers that God's Grace, if taught as a GIFT, is...>"license to sin".
Think on that for a bit, and make sure you grasp it Reader.

You'll find the devil's deceived ranting while climbing walls that the Gift of God, when taught correctly AS ''the GIFT of Righteousness"", is...>"cheap grace" .
Its what they do, as they are deceived in their own self righteousness, and can no longer SEE the Grace of God as Freely Given.....and are so subverted within themselves that when they hear the Gospel, and are confronted with the Truth of Amazing GRACE...they completely implode in fits of self righteousness.
You find these carnal heretics as Mods, as Preachers, as Teachers, and as ultra offensive to the Cross members ruining all Christian Forums.

Lets look now at Romans 10.

Here is the Legalist. ""For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness" = The Devil's Gospel.

So, you find these water baptized cult of mary types and Ultra Calvinists and similar ranting about the Law and Commandments and all the SELF EFFORT theology they can spew out to try to replace or subvert the Grace of God.

And Xaris... here is that Peace you are referring to, and why we have it, if we are born again..

WE start here....Hebrews 10:14. : """ For by one offering God hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified""
Notice the duration of the perfected... Its """FOREVER"".
And notice the sanctification is finished....."them that ARE".... its not, them that will be, or can be, or may be.....its "ARE"....= finished. "ARE" as in completed.

And here is the peace.... Romans 5:1.... """being Justified....we HAVE Peace WITH GOD""...

And this Peace is the Grace of God, that Legalist's try to subvert with self effort "fallen from Grace" theology.
A legalist, a heretic, would have you trying to earn this peace with God by lifestyle, which denies and obscures and contradicts God's Grace which is a FREE GIFT that is given, and not earned or kept.

A question...

How do the following verses apply to what @Behold has said?

2Pe 2:18, For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
2Pe 2:19, While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
2Pe 2:20, For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
2Pe 2:21, For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
2Pe 2:22, But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Jude 1:3-4, NIV:

Jde 1:3, Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.
Jde 1:4, For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about[fn] long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

This scripture means that ungodly teachers will come in the last days who teach that the grace of the Lord *is* a license for immorality...

That if you are saved by grace, it is a free-for all concerning sinning...you can do whatever you want and you will still be saved (apart from being born again of the Holy Spirit so that your very desires are changed).

They teach that if you want to go and drink a keg of beer or commit fornication, that this cannot affect your salvation.

I would beg to differ with them; for it is written,

Heb 3:12, Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
Heb 3:13, But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

I would say that drinking a keg of beer may not affect your salvation (technically) if you are a true believer (but if you were a true believer, why would you drink a keg of beer?); but that in doing so you will be flirting with sin and the fact of the matter is that sin is deceitful...and therefore that act of drinking that keg of beer (or even a can) may in fact be the first step down a pathway to destruction at the end of which is the lake of fire.

If you are disobedient to what Jesus has commanded you, then when the storms of life come, your house will fall and great will be the fall of it (Matthew 7:26-27, Luke 6:49).

Not to mention the scripture teaches us that those who commit fornication and do other wicked things shall not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

It is certainly not that we are saved by our self-effort...

However, there is a practical righteousness (1 John 3:7) that is given (Romans 5:17) to those who truly believe in Jesus Christ...and in order to receive that righteousness, we must repent (Luke 13:1-5)...

Because God is not going to force you to live a holy life...and the scripture is clear also that without holiness no one shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)...

So then, we must make a decision to surrender our sins to Jesus, laying them at the foot of the Cross...

And this decision will turn out to mean salvation for many.

Then you do not have to "white-knuckle it" when it comes to resisting temptation...

Because you have a resolve that you are not going to turn back to sin.

If you have become a recipient of the true grace of God (see 1 Peter 5:10-12 (kjv))...

He will make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, and settle you...

Here is a passage that changed my life...

Eze 33:11, Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Eze 33:12, Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.
Eze 33:13, When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.
Eze 33:14, Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;
Eze 33:15, If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.
Eze 33:16, None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.
Eze 33:17, Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.
Eze 33:18, When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.
Eze 33:19, But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.
Eze 33:20, Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.

Who are the ones excluded from the Kingdom of God?

Galatians 5
[19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
[20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
[21] Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Who are the ones who will inherit the Kingdom of God?

Galatians 5
[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
[23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
[24] And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

The answer is found within the Scripture that I provided; however, I am persuaded to believe that you're just tempting me.

I don't want to put words in your mouth but the 1 John verses makes me believe you think they are not believers and are lost.
